During the winter of 2006 lake Peipsi froze (as it does nearly every winter) we were able to go for a drive on the lake and walk to Piirissaar.
After we parked the car, because of a crack in the ice that we probably could not cross, we continued to walk over the ice to the island of Piirissaar (visible in the background of the photo below).
The freezing lake has had historical significance. On April 5, 1242, a frozen lake Peipsi was the scene of the Batlle of the Ice between the Livonian Order (a branch of the Teutonic Knights) and the Republic of Novgorod led by Alexander Nevsky. The battle was mostly fought on the frozen lake itself and was won by the Republic of Novgorod.
