One of the last and fiercest battles between the Russians and Germans in Estonia at the end of World War II took place in Tehumardi. The rest of Sõrve peninsula fell a little later completing the occupation of Estonia by Soviet forces. During the ensuing occupation the Soviets built this memorial to their soldiers.
Approximately 200 Russian soldiers are buried near the memorial, it is unclear where the German soldiers are buried.
