Along one of the paths up to Toompea hill, lies the Danish King's garden. There is a metal shield in the garden with the Danish flag on it. In 1219 the Danes conquered Tallinn, legend has it that the Danes nearly lost the battle and summoned help from God, who handed them the red flag with the white cross, thus giving them their national flag.
The name Tallinn, is said to be short for "Taani Linn" which means Danish Town, or "Taani Linnus" which means Danish Fortress.
