Kiltsi manor was completed in its present form in 1790 and built on the ruins of a vassal-fortress from the 14th and 15th century that was destroyed during the Livonian War.
From 1801 to 1846 the manor was home to the Baltic German knight Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770-1846) who became an admiral in the Russian navy and led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. He compiled his "Atlas of the Southern Seas" in the western tower of the manor.
We visited the manor in September 2009, when it was still undergoing major reconstruction work supported by a grant from Norway. We are looking forward to visiting it again once the renovation has been completed.
