Valka is the name of the Latvian part of the town. Without any border controls left, one easily walks from the Estonian to the Latvian side. St. Catherine's church on the Latvian side of town was destroyed twice, once in 1702 during the Great Northern War and once in 1752. In 1907 the tower and roof burned down. The church was reconstructed each time and takes a prominent place in the center of the Valka.
