For the purpose of collecting visitor statistics I have developed a tracking software tool called StatEye, which is now freely available under an open source license. It allows me to collect all kinds of (non-personal) information, some of which I present here. Also at the end of this page are some statistics concerning the website itself.
This data is compiled from the pageview and visitor totals on the 7is7.com server in the given periods. Although the totals seem high they are not extremely high and therefor the statistical results presented here can be quite specific to this website. So although these results may be an interesting indication of overall trends one cannot necessarily apply them to the Internet in general.

There never seemed to be much that changed in the usage of operating systems, until the Mac's recent gains in market share at the expense of windows. It would be nice to see more people use Linux.

All the Gecko based browsers together systematically take between 25% and 30% of the browser market. KHTML based browsers have also made inroads, probably piggybacking on the recent success of the Mac. In the mean time Trident based browsers have seen their market share slowly erode.

Firefox has made impressive gains in the browser market share reaching 25% in February 2007 and 30% in February 2008. Opera is still hanging in there with around a percent. The sudden jump for Firefox in April 2007 to over 30% was most likely due to the publication that month of the Firefox bankcard, which became a hit on Digg.
The use of Firefox increases by about 1.5% in December of every year, presumably because people are more likely to use it at home than at work. In 2008 the usual drop in January did not occur and instead Firefox continued gaining market share.

Google continues to dominate the search engine market with a market share that has grown to around 90%. Only Yahoo! and Live Search/MSN still have any significant market share.
